Do you believe in love? Are you someone who believes in MODERN DAY ‘DATING’ or someone who believes in eternal love, ‘OLD FASHIONED’, as they say? Why I suddenly raised this question? Ah! Valentine’s day is just a few more days away. We all tend to relate February with love. Don’t we? Flowers, chocolates, red-hearts and romance. That’s what Valentine’s is all about, right? But, why only a day to celebrate love, why not celebrate it everyday, why not consider the whole year as love year? Different people have different perspective. So have you ever tried to find the story behind this day? Why this one day is celebrated as love day and not others.
Well! It all started in 269 A.D., Valentine a simple christian priest came forward and stood up for love, for those thousands of couples who saw their hopes of matrimony dashed by the single act of a tyrant by Emperor Claudius. The act that was started because Claudius believed that recruitment for the army was down because Roman men did not want to leave their lovers and families behind. Despite the emperor’s orders, Valentine began to secretly marry the soldiers before they went off to the war. And when Claudius came to know about the secret, he had Valentine thrown into prison and deemed that he would be put to death.
As Valentine was awaiting execution he fell in love with a blind girl who happened to be the jailer’s daughter. On the eve of his execution, Valentine is said to have written her a sonnet with the ink he squeezed from the violets. It is said that his words made the blind girl see again. It was a brief romance because the next day Valentine was clubbed to death. Saint Valentine gave his life so that young couples could bond together in holy matrimony. Eventually, the Catholic Church granted Valentine sainthood and decided to create a feast in his honor.
